History
The original founding of this town was formed around a depot for the North Alabama Railroad in the year 1825. At the time, it formed out into a circle that was approximately a half mile in diameter. Though the original depot has long since vanished, the town to which it gave birth lives on. A man named Elias Sharp, a judge in the area, was one of the original homeowners in the community, and the town takes its name after him. The community was formally incorporated into a town in 1871.

Agriculture was the dominant industry of the town, with the growing of cotton giving rise to cotton gins and storage facilities. The railroad enabled quick transport of their crop, along with goods coming into Sharpsburg for trade. Around the turn of the 20th century, the small economy diversified, with new businesses and tradesmen coming in. A pharmacy, along with several blacksmiths set up shop here, and then a bank was finally constructed.

The town suffered an extended rough spot during the Great Depression, followed by an exodus of residents. However, by the 1940s, the trend began to reverse itself, and the town recovered. While Sharpsburg remains a rural town, it is economically stable, and a welcoming place to visit. Today, it rests on 0.60 square miles, just 0.004 of which is water. As of the 2010 census, it reported a population of 341 citizens. There is a 2015 estimate of 354.
